Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) is an outpatient treatment that enables specialists to remove tumors just beneath the gastrointestinal (GI) lining without surgery. Utilizing an endoscope (a pliable, cylindrical instrument), our Digestive Health Center gastroenterologists (doctors who specialize in addressing the gastrointestinal tract) can see inside the body with an elevated level of detail. During the same procedure, they can remove growths, including upper GI or colon nodules, that may otherwise require surgery. Most people return home once the procedure is done. Since there is no incision, you may recover faster and with less pain than with conventional or laparoscopic surgery. If you would like to schedule an endoscopic mucosal resection in Ocean Springs, MS, or any other test used to address the GI system, please contact a Digestive Health Center location near you.

This technique is a minimally invasive substitute to surgery for removing abnormal tissues from the digestive tract lining. Your provider may recommend this procedure to extract certain early-phase cancers or precancerous tumors.

Some of the issues that EMR has been utilized to treat include the following:

  • Colon polyps
  • Gastric (stomach) cancer
  • Esophageal cancer
  • Cancer of the small intestine (duodenum)
  • Colon and rectal cancer
  • Barrett’s esophagus
  • Noncancerous tumors of the uterus (leiomyomas)

If you have any of the above conditions and want to learn more about this procedure, get in touch with a local Digestive Health Center as soon as possible.

Potential complications of endoscopic mucosal resection are:

  • Bleeding: This is the most common complication and can often be noticed and remedied during the procedure.
  • Narrowing of the esophagus: Extracting certain esophageal lesions can enhance the chance of scarring, which tapers the esophagus. This might lead to difficulty swallowing and require further treatment.
  • Puncture (perforation): There is a minor risk of a puncture through the wall of the gastrointestinal tract, conditional on the size and location of the extracted lesion.

Call your Ocean Springs, MS gastroenterologist immediately or get emergency care if you experience any of the following symptoms after you have an endoscopic mucosal resection:

  • Throwing up
  • Bright red blood in the stool
  • Fainting
  • Trouble breathing
  • Fever
  • Black stool
  • Chest or abdominal discomfort
  • Chills

A follow-up appointment with your Digestive Health Center GI specialist will be scheduled to discuss the results of your endoscopic mucosal resection and any lab tests conducted on tissue samples. Questions to ask your specialist include:

  • How will you check my health?
  • What were the findings of the lab exams? Do I have cancer?
  • If I have cancer, will I require additional treatments?
  • Do I need to see a cancer specialist (oncologist)?
  • Were you able to withdraw all abnormal tissue?

Typically, you will undergo an additional upper endoscopy or colonoscopy several months following your procedure to ensure the entire lesion is gone. When you have your initial procedure, your provider may stain the section of the eliminated polyp with ink (tattoo) so that the area can be readily checked when you have any future exams. The requirements for extra appointments depend on the outcomes of these results.

Dr.McKee put a stint in me after my gallbladder was removed. Did a very good job of explaining to me the reasons why it was put in. Go back in a week to get it removed. Have a scheduled colonoscopy for next month with Dr.McKee. He was very comfortable to talk with and the nurse that scheduled all my appointments was very helpful and explained everything to me until I understood everything.
