Esophageal dilation is a procedure in which your Digestive Health Center provider will dilate (or spread out) a constricted or clogged section of your esophagus. Esophageal dilation is generally performed as an endoscopic exam to address digestive concerns that come with the constricting, or stricture, of the esophagus.

Most frequently utilized is balloon dilation, where the balloon is introduced at the point of the stricture using the camera on an endoscope and is then inflated to expand the esophagus. Esophageal dilation is not utilized as an approach to cure any disorders or ailments but as a therapeutic procedure to alleviate symptoms. Therefore, you may need to receive esophageal dilation therapy numerous times based on the nature of your problem. If you need esophageal dilation in Ocean Springs, MS, talk to a local practice for additional information.

There are various reasons a client could benefit from esophageal dilation. A few of the common issues that often result in esophageal dilation therapy can include:

  • GERD (chronic acid reflux)
  • Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE)
  • Chemical damage to the esophagus that results in swelling and constricting
  • Esophageal cancer

Talk to a local Digestive Health Center to find a gastroenterologist near you who can help dilate your esophagus so that you may secure the relief you require.

Most people who obtain esophageal dilation in Ocean Springs, MS may return to consuming their regular diet after the therapy once any numbness subsides. Begin by consuming soft foods, such as bananas, eggs, and pudding, especially if you still have difficulty swallowing. Chew your food well before swallowing. Talk to your provider about any concerns you may have and what foods may be right for you.

Complications are uncommon when performed by highly qualified specialists. However, even when executed correctly, an esophageal dilation can cause issues. Such difficulties involve a tear in the esophagus lining, bleeding, and adverse response to anesthesia. Speak with your digestive health specialist about any concerns you may have and specific risks for your condition.

Dr.McKee put a stint in me after my gallbladder was removed. Did a very good job of explaining to me the reasons why it was put in. Go back in a week to get it removed. Have a scheduled colonoscopy for next month with Dr.McKee. He was very comfortable to talk with and the nurse that scheduled all my appointments was very helpful and explained everything to me until I understood everything.
